As many already knew from my Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, yesterday was the inauguration of the World Swimming Championships FINA in Barcelona and I had the great honor to be part of the organizing team of the event led by Hansel Cereza. Along with many amazing people we have worked for months with rehearsals, designs and production of the entire event. I’ve been responsible for “atrezzo” which means design and development of accessories for both costumes to scenery.
Here I share some photos of the event and some of the “making of” of the preparations and processes for the Inauguration BCN 2013.
I’ve been in charge of wardrobe of the 160 children, “Children plankton”. As you can see in these photos above, they were dressed entirely in white. Girls wore a white bathing suit with a collar of strips in sheer fabrics and handpainted with phosphorescent paint drops matching the hat too. The boys wore a white “slip” with a fringed crest painted on the hat.
With the white color we wanted to represent the purity and innocence of children, while camouflaging the fluorescent paint so it just showed when the lights went out to give the magic touch of plankton.
Here you can see how I sewed the strip of fringes for the ridge hats for the boys and then painted with spots, drops and points of light strokes to give the feeling of plankton in the water.
The girls necklaces were made in chiffon white elastic and gauze. Painted with phosphorescent paint and then cut into strips to give a sense of sea wrack in the water.
Here a part of clothing drying of the phosphorescent paint.
Here some of the girls with their “total look”. These are the sweetest girls in the world. At the end of the whole presentation I got a tear when they came to give me a hug and say goodbye 🙂 (to work with so many children at once can be a bit difficult, but definitely worth it. They’re Grateful and their smiles have no measures. It has been a great experience I will always carry with me)
I painted the boys with a kind of “gills” mark on each side of the neck. It also represents the symbol of this edition of the Fina Swimming World BCN 2013 with the slogan “Welcome planet water”
Here I show you what was the camouflage of three trampolines that were located at the end of the pool. Covered by a fishing net, I knotted strip by strip of fabric in green, blue and rust colors to give the feeling of algae and object from the sea.
No doubt this was the most spectacular and applause moment of the night. The human tower into the pool of “castells”. Not only because of how hard it was to do this wet and under three meters deep, also for being one of the most beautiful Catalan traditions and representative of Barcelona 2013.
Finally this photograph of the swimmer crossing the pool (the path of his life) Since the jumped into the pool as a child, as an adult swims, and climb out of the pool as old man to “PLANET WATER”.
I hope you enjoyed this post, It has been a magical and unforgettable night that I will always carry with me.
A big hug and thanks to the whole team of RPM and Hansel Cereza.
