DIY Open back shirt

Summer heat is increasing and I feel like having bight colors and fresh and light clothes on! So I decided to do a DIY project upgrading a summer basic shirt with a hole in the back in the form of a U, inspired from the winter tutorial DIY “Holes in shirt”

This DIY is very easy to make and brings a fun and modern look to your classic shirt!

Materials:

  • Basic shirt with or without sleeves
  • Scissors
  • Chalk
  • Ring (optional)
  • Measuring tape
  • Pins
  • Bias ribbon or fleece ribbon (if you don’t want to sew)

Process:

1. Draw a U from the shoulders to the point in the back you want and cut it out leaving 1cm inwards. (I previously tried the shirt to measure were the bra started so it wouldn’t show)

2. As my shirt is a little big, I removed the back making a cut in the middle.

3. From the “U” form you cutted out, cut out two strips for the back … I made 2 strips of 10 cm x 15 cm (I’ve sewn and turned inside out)

4. To polish the hole in the back you have two options:

a) Sew the bias ribbon around the edge on the outside of the shirt and then turn inward (cut picketing the edge so the fabric won’t pull)

b) If you don’t want to sew, make pickets cuts and iron 1cm in the curve edges inward and secure it ironing a fleece strip.

5. Iron everything to make the hole look polished and flat. If you want, sew the edge to finish it and prevent it from folding inside out.

6. Enter the two strips through the ring and sew them behind. (This is just a decoration, if you prefer it without the ring skip this step)

7. Sew the strip to the neck and the other end in the middle of the back.

Tip: Before you sew it, secure it with pins and try on the shirt for you to check that the strip is not too long or too short.

This boring shirt has become much more interesting, but still with a minimalistic look …

I hope you like this idea for your summer clothes: shirts, blouses, dresses…

Until the next DIY! Thanks for reading 😉
